The outline you create should help you achieve the goal you've set in your mind.

So let’s look at the steps to write a persuasive essay outline.

Step 1: Choose Your Topic

Before you can start writing a persuasive essay, you need to come up with a topic.

Brainstorming is a great way to generate ideas.

Keep the following in mind when brainstorming:

  • Think about topics you're passionate about.  These are usually going to be the best topics for your essay.
  • Don't choose an essay topic that is too broad or too narrow. You want to pick something that you can argue convincingly, but also has enough depth.
  • Choose a topic that is current and relevant. You want your readers to be able to relate to your argument. So picking a topic that is timely and relevant is essential.
  • Don't be afraid to think outside the box. Sometimes the most unexpected topics can make for the best essays. Consider controversial or unique angles on familiar topics.
  • Know your audience.

Who are you writing for?

What do they believe in?

Knowing your audience will help you craft your argument in a way that resonates with them.

Step 2: Do Research

These sources can include scholarly articles, books, and websites.

Once you have found some good sources, take a look at the evidence they provide. See if it supports your position.

If you have enough evidence to support you, then you are ready to start crafting your persuasive essay outline!

A good persuasive essay structure includes the following:

Introduction ( 5-6 sentences)

  • Hook (1-2 sentences): Looking to add a spark to your writing? Start with a quote, scenario, question, or vivid description in your introductory paragraph. This will help grab your reader's attention right from the start.
  • Thesis statement (1 sentence): A persuasive essay’s introduction needs a topic sentence or thesis statement where you take a stand on the issue.
  • Base Arguments (2-3 sentences): I have three reasons that will change your mind about my point of view. First, _____. Second, ______. Finally, ______.

Paragraph 2-4 ( 5-8 sentences each )

  • You'll find your initial idea or argument in the first paragraph. In this second paragraph, it's time to elaborate on that point and provide evidence or examples to support it.
  • In the persuasive essay body paragraphs, using specific examples makes your argument more concrete and convincing. Use the elements of Ethos, Pathos, or Logos to defend yourself.
  • Transition to the next paragraph.

Conclusion (3-5 sentences)

  • Summarise your essay: My thesis statement and three arguments can be succinctly summarized as follows ____.
  • End with a strong conclusion that leaves your reader with something to think about.
  • You can also include a call-to-action or persuasive statement in the final paragraph.
